At Nile Breweries, we believe that businesses have a responsibility to contribute positively to the communities where they operate. In commemoration of World Water Day on March 22, we carried out various community outreach activities in our different areas of operation aimed at improving access to clean water.
The theme of this year’s World Water Day was “Accelerating Change,” aimed at solving the water and sanitation crisis. Our water stewardship goal is to ensure that 100% of our communities in high-stress areas have measurably improved water availability and quality by 2025. We are implementing tailored solutions in partnership with others to address the local, complex water challenges where we operate.
To achieve our goal, we are working with various communities. We were privileged to be part of the Uganda Water and Environment Week celebrations in Kampala that spanned from 12-17th March spearheaded by the Ministry of Water and Environment by donating water and cleaning materials to support sanitation activities.
Our team in Mbarara donated a 10,000L water tank to Mbarara Mixed Primary School, which caters to children with disabilities. In Jinja, the team kicked off the celebrations by participating in the Nile Run aimed at saving River Nile and Lake Victoria. They climaxed the celebrations by refurbishing a dilapidated borehole in Bugoba A in Nyenga, which had been non-functional for the last 4 years, providing a sustainable source of clean water for over 1000 residents in the community.
“People would walk several kilometres to fetch water from the lake. Now, a borehole within the vicinity has been made functional for your use,” said John Busiku, the Senior Environment Officer – Njeru Municipal Council as he addressed the residents that were in attendance.
We believe that access to clean water is a basic human right, and we are committed to contributing to efforts that ensure that communities have access to this vital resource. We are proud of the progress we have made towards our goal and remain committed to accelerating change in communities in need.
