Nile Breweries Limited handed UGX. 303 Million to secondary schools and universities where students under its Equality Scholarship programme attend, in a ceremony at the company head office in Luzira, Kampala. The money will go towards the 2019 school fees and welfare expenses for the 102 beneficiaries, who comprise 42 secondary school students; 20 university students; and 45 orphans who lost their parents in the July 11, 2010 bombing. In attendance were school representatives, students and NBL Corporate Affairs team. “NBL is paying full fees and basic requirements for each of the students for the three terms of this year, so that they concentrate on their studies,” said Thomas Kamphuis, the NBL Country Director. “This is in line with the commitment of our mother company, ABInbev, to create a Better World,” he said.

The annual scholarship programme has since 2011 benefited the best PLE performing pupil in selected districts, largely in areas that grow sorghum and barley for NBL in Eastern and Western Uganda. The students are supported from Senior One until university, with the currently enrolled students costing the company approximately UGX 2 Billion to complete their undergraduate studies.“We thank NBL for bridging the gap and also promoting equalization of opportunities to learners,” said, Elias Mugisha, Head Teacher Namirembe Hillside High School, one of the partner schools where students are enrolled. Other partner schools include Gayaza High School, Mt St Mary’s Namagunga, Nabisunsa Girls School, Uganda Martyrs Namugongo,  St Mary’s Kitende, Seeta High School, Kings College Budo, Ntare School and St Marys’ College Kisubi. Programmes such as our Equality Scholarship enable us give back to communities and empower them.
